Wanted: The Perfect Pet

“Wanted: The Perfect Pet” is a funny book written by Fiona Robertson. Henry really wanted a pet with a personality. He wanted another pet that would be not a frog. He started making advertisements. He set up things to be sold for a dog. In chapter two there was a duck. Nobody ever called him or did anything. He did things on his own. One day he opened up a paper and he saw that. He wanted to be a dog so he could be and have a friend. He created the perfect disguise. Chapter three talks about how Henry was happy he got a dog. But the Duck couldn’t run well like a dog or play. The duck’s disguise fell over, He then started crying but Henry accepted him and helped him. He started trying to find things to make him a dog. He then said it might be for the perfect pet for him and called him Spot. In my opinion, this book made me remember about my moms past. I connected to another book called the ugly duckling. During the ugly duckling, he gets neglected by his family but then later gets accepted so it’s like the book we read. I connected Text to self because I had a duck once. When I had this duck I loved it so much but sadly it passed away. I connected to the world because I’ve seen cases of animals going to the wrong owners but the owners still accept it.  My last connection was to the media because I’ve seen many videos from the DoDo.

Wangaris Tree

“Wangari’s Trees of Peace: A true story from Africa” is an inspiring book written by Jeanette Winter. She lived in a village and gathered supplies with her mother. Something happened when she went and all the forest was wiped out. She wanted to replant all the trees and started spreading her ideas. The men said that the woman couldn’t plant them  Ignored and they wanted to plant the seeds. They cubbed her and started hitting her and this news spread around the villages of Africa. This made people want to take part in her plans by helping her by planting trees. The army hated Wangari but she still moved on and changed Africa. In this book, I could connect to how she shared her love with nature. I love animals and nature so I would do the same thing Wangari did.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is an inspiring book written by William Kam Kwamba and illustrated by Elizabeth Zunon. This book talks about how a little child from a small country in Africa wants to help his family and country. His family started going broke and had very little food resources. He went to his library and started putting together ideas, studying and also creating. He created a windmill that gave energy to light bulbs and also created water for the crops so his family and city wouldn’t starve anymore. He then got sent to talk to other people and they installed Solar Panels and other things to help their family and he then got a place at the New   University. I can connect to this to media when I read a similar article probably about the same kid. I also Connected to the world with the different articles I have read and how the world is also struggling with electricity and food sources. My last connection was to myself because in school we learned about wind power and energy and how it works and where it can be used. The kid in this story was particularly smart because he used the wind to his advantage.

After The Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again

“After The Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again” is an amusing book written and illustrated by Dan Santat. This book talks about how Humpty Dumpty gets back up from his fall. Humpty Dumpty was on the top of the wall. He stared at the birds until one day, he fell down. Humpty Dumpty said that all accidents happen so he was glued back together but some parts didn’t remain the same as before. From that moment on he becaame scared of heights. He never wanted to climb up that wall again. He began creating different things to fly with the birds again. But then he decided to climb up the wall and he made it. From that day on he stayed there. I made a few connections to this story. I connected to another book that I once read that talked about a kid that was afraid of heights. Also, I connected to how I was scared to jump from a diving board when I was small. I connected to the world from all the different articles I’ve read about the Berlin and Mexican wall. The last connection was about Social Media and about history.

The Noisy Paint Box The Colors and sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract

“The Noisy Paint Box The Colors and sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract” is a unique book written by Barb Rosenstock and Illustrated by Mary Gradpre. This book talks about a little boy called Vasya. He was doing his own things and heard his paint box hiss. He then told his parents but they just said he was acting silly. He then painted the noises he heard. He ignored his noisy paint box and continued going to school. Vasya went to an Orchestra show and could hear the colors dancing. He then moved to Munich from Moscow to continue painting. As he continued to grow he still experienced the hearing of colors. I connected to this book because when h explained how he heard colors as sounds, it made me think about another book I read with a description that had a similar gift like the author. My second connection was to myself. I connected because Vasya liked to paint. Even though I don’t hear the colors I like art and painting. I connected to the world from this book because some people, including one of my relatives, have the same gift of hearing colors. My last connection was to media. I have seen many different videos of art and how it can change how a person acts and calm them, and in this case, Vasya calmed himself down by hearing different colors and painting them out in his artwork.

There

“There”, is a weird book written and illustrated by Morie-Louise Fitzpatrick. This book talks about the feelings or ideas of a little boy or girl. The book is rather confusing at the beginning, but slowly going to the end it starts making more and more sense each time. The boy or girl has different feelings, he explains it in metaphorical ways and also in different feelings. I can connect to this from the text in the book to another book I read that had similar metaphors and described it in a similar way. When the little boy describes the different feelings he had in those ways, he reminded of me when I was in bed as a child and had thoughts just like him. When on one page I saw an illustration of umbrellas, it reminded me of all the rain we got here in Vancouver and some of the things people say. My last connection to Media was that during the book I saw many images that were portrayed in different quotes that I saw on social media. Overall, this book had many inspirational things and it was kind of weird.

The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau

The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau is a peculiar book written and Illustrated by Dan Yaccarina. It talks about how a man Named Jacques Cousteau loved exploring the sea and tinkering. He loved exploring it a lot but some people told him also to consider some sport so he also found out swimming was another one of his passions. One day he got in a really bad car accident and the doctors told him to wear braces for the rest of his life on his arms. He decided to go swimming every day and one of his friends took into consideration to give him a pair of goggles. When he went swimming he couldn’t for a long time because his swim gear was heavy. He started tinkering trying to find out new ways but It didn’t really work. Then Jaques and his friend that was an Engineer created an apparatus called Aquaman. He wanted to share the beauty of the sea with the world so he bought a camera and adapted it so it could be used to film underwater. He then bought a boat for filming and used as his film “studio”. He discovered different treasures and also a shipwreck. He also created a diving saucer that could go 350 meters deep and then another one that could go 500 meters deep! He wanted to build underwater labs but after some months he found out it couldn’t work. He also explored the waters of Antarctica. He saw different coral reefs and animals until when he came back to the Mediterranean he saw that the waters were polluted and he decided to spread knowledge by creating an organization called Cousteau and they knowledged different people. I found this book really interesting because I made a lot of connections and the quotes were relatable. When Jaques created his organization I instantly thought about our trip to Ambleside in grade six where we learned different things about the ocean. This book also reminded me of another book I read in grade five explaining about another person with similar passions. When Jaques was exploring the different reefs and animals underwater, I thought about a magazine that went worldwide called National Geographic that explains different things in the world and one magazine was really interesting. The last connection I made was seeing all the pollution on the media. In school, we have done many projects that featured the same idea.

Enemy Pie

Enemy Pie Is a funny book written by Derek Munson that is for the ages 6+. It talks about how a little boy was having a great summer until a new kid came in the neighbourhood. The kids name is Jeremy Ross and Jeremy isn’t the ideal nice person, he is not nice at all and laughed whenever the boy missed his shot in baseball and didn’t invite him to his party on the trampoline. The boy is mad so he tells his dad that this boy bullies him so then his dad tells shows him the best solution which is making enemy pie. When he makes it, the boy is playing outside and the next thing he needs to do is go and spend the day with Jeremy and be extra nice. They played and the boy realized Jeremy wasn’t that bad after all so when It was time for dessert, the boy said the pie was poisoned but he didn’t realize that his dad was trying to make them friends with a great pie. I can connect to this when the time I was playing with my friends and they left me to play with a guy that was my enemy. I wanted to get rid of him but in the end, we just became a group of friends. I also connected to another book that was really similar to this one and it was  called The Recess Queen. Also when Jeremy treats his “frenemy” nicely, it reminds me of videos and also stuff i have seen go on around the world through media. The last connection I made was when he made the enemy pie because on Social Media I have seen different people actually take videos of treating an enemy (not friend) nicely and give them food or other things.

Sir Cumference + the Dragon of Pi: A math adventure

Sir Cumference + the Dragon of Pi: A math adventure, is a really unique and cool book written by Cindy Neuschwander and Illustrated by Wayne Geehan. Circumference belly was on fire. Radius went to find a doctor for circumference. Radius looked for a good cure. He picked a bottle that said firey belly. When he gave it to Circumference, he disappeared and a dragon came out. The guards saw the dragons. They asked for reinforces to eliminate the dragon. Radius looked for potions to make his father normal again. Measure the middle. He found a large box with a poem. He then thought he should go to Gio for help. Then he went to Pinky which was a cook. He had to find the perfect. He went to look for the doctor again but still couldn’t find him. He measured different things to find the exact ratio to use. Radius went to the doctor’s room. He re-read the poem to pour in the exact dose. He fell asleep but then he woke and ran with his potion. He turned again to a circle but really big. He then started measuring his diameter. He found out what to do and then BOOM! The circumference was back! They celebrated by eating Pie and all the knights were amazed. They then declared a Pi day that lasted for three days, three hours and twenty-six minutes. In my opinion, this story was different because it also showed some mathematical problems and was kind of hard to keep up with. I enjoyed it and thought that the way they represented Pi day was unusual. Overall, I thought this book had a mathematical purpose and I recommend this book for people of any age learning about circles and Pi.

Kindness #5

In the past few days my Aunts cats have been at our house because they went on vacation. There are two cats. Giordi is a super friendly one who never stops cuddling with you or getting kisses while Kimba, is the complete opposite. He is afraid of humans because he was mistreated and abused in the past. He usually hides under counters and comes out only to eat. I babysat them for quite a bit since Giordi got wild and Kimba, even though he was shy, had his own fiesty moments where he would jump around and I had to look at them. This made me feel happy because the cats are fun to play with and my Aunty also was counting on me to take good care of her cats. She probably felt satisfied to not pay money for a cat hotel. I chose to do this because I wanted to spend time with the cats and also because it was an easy thing to do.
