The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau

The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau is a peculiar book written and Illustrated by Dan Yaccarina. It talks about how a man Named Jacques Cousteau loved exploring the sea and tinkering. He loved exploring it a lot but some people told him also to consider some sport so he also found out swimming was another one of his passions. One day he got in a really bad car accident and the doctors told him to wear braces for the rest of his life on his arms. He decided to go swimming every day and one of his friends took into consideration to give him a pair of goggles. When he went swimming he couldn’t for a long time because his swim gear was heavy. He started tinkering trying to find out new ways but It didn’t really work. Then Jaques and his friend that was an Engineer created an apparatus called Aquaman. He wanted to share the beauty of the sea with the world so he bought a camera and adapted it so it could be used to film underwater. He then bought a boat for filming and used as his film “studio”. He discovered different treasures and also a shipwreck. He also created a diving saucer that could go 350 meters deep and then another one that could go 500 meters deep! He wanted to build underwater labs but after some months he found out it couldn’t work. He also explored the waters of Antarctica. He saw different coral reefs and animals until when he came back to the Mediterranean he saw that the waters were polluted and he decided to spread knowledge by creating an organization called Cousteau and they knowledged different people. I found this book really interesting because I made a lot of connections and the quotes were relatable. When Jaques created his organization I instantly thought about our trip to Ambleside in grade six where we learned different things about the ocean. This book also reminded me of another book I read in grade five explaining about another person with similar passions. When Jaques was exploring the different reefs and animals underwater, I thought about a magazine that went worldwide called National Geographic that explains different things in the world and one magazine was really interesting. The last connection I made was seeing all the pollution on the media. In school, we have done many projects that featured the same idea.
